It was a Big Gigantic show at the Drive In Concert Series at Westland Mall presented by Prime Social Group

I absolutely had no idea what to expect before pulling into the back parking lot of the old Westland mall to cover the Big Gigantic show (see what I did there?!) on June 11th so when I couldn't get my trunk to open and the security guard looked at my friends in the car and said "hey guys, maybe don't let her drive next time since she can't even open her own trunk" I knew that we were in for some fun.

To be fair, I always get nervous before I shoot shows so that explains my lack of being able to work my own trunk. Plus, this was the first big show in eight months that I needed to clear security for to attend and I'm a little out of practice. All excuses I know, so let's move on shall we.

Now to admit the second thing in this article I'm not proud of. This was my first ever EDM show. Yes, I have been living under a rock, thanks for asking. Growing up the only electronic/dance I was exposed to was Daft Punk and that wasn't until One More Time went mainstream. I enjoyed Daft Punk, definitely, but if I'm being honest, I feel like EDM is an acquired taste and if you aren't super exposed to it you won't truly appreciate it or get into which is where I stood for most of my life. Luckily, I had my two resident EDM friends along for the ride to explain things to me.

After we got settled and I started walking around the first thing I noticed was the crowd. Unicorn hair, bright colors, shiny, sparkly attire, big crazy sunglasses and glitter were every where. It was in that moment I realized these were my people and I've missed out on them my entire life. It was just good vibes all around and I was completely blown away to see so many people just having fun and being who they are without one single care.

"Yeah, that's what EDM is all about. Good vibes, no judgment, dancing and enjoying yourself while being who you are" was the reply I got when I told my friend how I was feeling about my so far experience.

Just from being around the crowd, I got a little more excited for the show. You could almost get lost in their energy. Big Gigantic took the stage and the party absolutely got wilder. Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salken who make up the duo from Boulder, Colorado had the crowd jumping (literally) all night. A strong mix of their old and new tunes were played which was appreciated by all. They even came out and did a couple more when the crowd yelled "one more song" while honking their car horns for an encore.

All and all it was a great night filled with good vibes, people dancing, enjoying life, music, their friends and bass shaking grooves. Which I can totally validate as this is the firs time I've felt the bass from a show vibrate through my entire body while standing in front of the stage.

I asked my friend what he thought after the show and his response was "they are fantastic live, that was a SHOW." As for me, I really enjoyed myself too and hope I get the opportunity to dig deeper in to the world of EDM shows down the line.

I also want to add that it was awesome to see people coming back out and supporting live music like normal again. I know that I have dearly missed it since the pandemic started and am so glad we all can get back together for shows, because in my opinion music is what saves the world and it definitely has not been the same without it.

Kudos to Zach Ruben and the staff over at Prime Social Group for giving everyone the chance to keep music going safely during the pandemic. I had the amazing opportunity to cover three shows at the Drive in Concert Series at Westland Mall and I can truly say it was an experience like no other. I'm kind of sad that they are probably coming to an end, but also grateful to have had them when all hope for live music was lost.
